Music That Builds Community
We don't just play big-band music — we pass it on. Through school workshops, mentorship, and partnerships, the SwingMasters invest in the next generation of musicians.
Passing the Music Forward
The SwingMasters has sponsored a jazz improvisation workshop for El Camino High School students for many years as part of our educational outreach. We bring in respected local jazz artists and educators to give students a taste of jazz theory — and play-along is a big part of every class, giving students the chance to work out jazz changes and phrases firsthand.
Many members of the band are (and still are) music educators who teach and support the next generation of jazz musicians. Several mentor young people at local high schools and at American River College.
A Tribute to Quincy Jones
SwingMasters joined American River College's band for an evening themed "A Tribute to Quincy Jones" — sharing the program rather than headlining it, one of many stages our members have stood on across the region.
The Anglim Trombone
The family of Dan Anglim, our past Treasurer, donated his Bach Model 16 trombone to the Swingmasters with their desire to award it to a promising young musician. Working with Dr. Dyne Eifertsen at American River College, we elected to present the horn to Lilli Guerrero, who has distinguished herself as a fine trombonist and jazz vocalist. Our President, Jim Buntin, reports that Lilli was quite pleased! Lilli will be attending Sonoma State University this fall, 2026.
American River College Jazz Workshop
SwingMasters has sponsored five students to attend the American River College summer jazz workshop over the past three years, and several band members have attended as well.
