The Trombone Section

Dan Anglim

Dan Anglim spent his formative years in St. Louis, but has been playing trombone locally for more than 10 years. He adds three other bands to his schedule, but he loves playing lead for the Swingmasters, and serves as the Band Treasurer.

Bruce Carstens

Bruce thoroughly enjoys keeping up with his trombone playing skills, though he has another life as a veterinarian.  Bruce is a frequent substitute for lead and other trombone parts with the Swingmasters, and is a valued member of the band.

Larry Tyrell

Larry is a former music teacher, having worked in the Sacramento region for more than 40 years.  Larry was well known as "that red-headed trombone  player" in his earlier years, and continues to excite the audiences with his improvised solos.

Gary Johnson

Gary started playing trombone in tenth grade and was a member of the Manteca Union High School Marching and Concert Bands.  Gary played at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton and played trombone part time while in the Navy.  After military and college he did not play for several years.  He picked up the trombone again in 1992 and has played in pit orchestras and three community bands including the Rancho Cordova River City Concert Band.

Gary has been playing in an English Hand Bell Choir for 25 years and has been with SwingMasters since 2002.

Dave Machado

The band's Promotion Manager and Librarian, Dave provides the bass trombone part for the band, joining the baritone sax player to generate the foundation for all of the other musicians.  Dave took up the trombone in the seventh grade.  He joined the 724th Air Force Band of the Golden West, later of the Pacific Northwest.  After discharge, Dave worked for 35 years, retiring from industry as an Environmental Engineer.

He later re-connected with former Air Force musicians and resumed playing trombone.  Dave currently performs in four other Sacramento area bands, and joined the SwingMasters in 2005.
